Gujarat ITIs Go Green: Large-Scale IT Asset Recovery Services Delivered Successfully

In a strategic initiative to support sustainable e-waste management and promote circular IT usage, a large-scale IT Asset Recovery Services project was undertaken for multiple Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across Gujarat. This case study outlines how ECS Environment successfully managed the recovery, refurbishment, and recycling of obsolete IT assets from 14 ITI hubs across the state.

The Government ITIs required a systematic collection and processing of outdated or non-functional IT products such as desktops, laptops, printers, and networking equipment. Their primary goals included:

• Disposing of e-waste responsibly through certified vendors
• Recovering refurbishable IT assets for reuse
• Ensuring all processes complied with e-waste and IT Asset Management regulations
• Selecting a vendor capable of servicing remote and urban regions across Gujarat

While implementing IT Asset Recovery Services in India at this scale, ECS faced several on-ground challenges:

• Inventory mismatches: Collected items often did not match the lists provided by ITIs
• Material shortages and missing parts in many of the recovered devices
• Non-cooperative or unavailable ITI staff, causing scheduling and verification delays
• Difficult logistics due to night travel and long-distance routes (400–450 km clusters)
• Physical constraints: Many ITI buildings lacked elevators, making it labor-intensive to move equipment from higher floors

ECS Environment implemented a structured and scalable plan tailored to meet the client’s operational and sustainability goals:

• Route Optimization: Developed efficient collection clusters to minimize travel time and maximize efficiency
• Team Deployment: Dispatched collection teams a day in advance and scheduled night travel to save working hours
• Customized Logistics: Deployed appropriate vehicles based on load and route capacity
• Real-Time Communication: Maintained ongoing coordination with ITI authorities to reduce delays
• Thorough Documentation: Ensured proper verification, gate pass sign-offs, and submission of tender-related paperwork
• Material Segregation: At the plant, all collected assets were classified into:
  • Refurbishable IT products for repair and resale
  • Non-functional components designated for certified dismantling and recycling

This process embodied best practices in IT Asset Recovery Solutions, enabling secure and environmentally responsible handling of electronic waste.

The project successfully achieved its objectives with measurable outcomes:

• 14 ITI regions serviced, covering over 100 sub-locations
• Over 10 metric tons of IT e-waste collected
• Refurbishment rate of 35%, reducing the demand for new hardware purchases
• Full regulatory compliance ensured for IT Asset Management and e-waste disposal

This project showcased how organized, large-scale IT Asset Recovery Services can be effectively implemented even in geographically diverse and logistically challenging environments.
